RESUMO: The present Master’s Thesis describes the results of a scientific investigation on the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials (1995-2000), by Philip Pullman, whose main objective is to investigate the presence of dæmons in the narrative and their relation with the psyche of characters. These creatures are connected with their humans to an extent that feelings and sensations are shared, and this raises the question of what is their role when considering the intricacies of the human mind. More specifically, our approach is based on the psychoanalytic studies on literature, and the purpose of the investigation is to compare dæmons with the three psychic instances described by Sigmund Freud ([1893–1895] 1964; [1917–1919] 1955; 1960; [1923] 1962; [1899] 1958), namely the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. This study is of qualitative nature (Kauark, Manhães, and Medeiros, 2010), developed through bibliographical research (Gil, 2007). For the development of the inquiry, our text has been divided into six sections, of which two consist of our theoretical background and one develops the analysis proposed. In the first part, we introduce the purpose of the research and establish the theoretical and methodological standards to develop it. For the second chapter, we present a State of the Art on Pullman’s works, in order to select papers that might be useful to our examination. The third describes the paradigms of the relation between literature, fantasy, and psychoanalysis, and the fourth presents a study on the development of the Second Topography by Freud, and how contemporary scholars apprehend this set of theories. Then, in chapter five, we analyze dæmons and their possible parallels with the Second Topography. For chapter three, our explorations were guided mainly by Alberti (2013), Furtado (2010), Kobori (2017), Marsillac et al. (2019), Rabêlo and Martins (2022), and Rivera ([2002] 2005). As for chapter four, names such as Cosentino (2004), Green (2000), Bergeret (2006), Bomfim (2008), Lima (2009), Vilaça (2019), Ahumada (2019), and Castelhano & Leite (2022) were fundamental to the comprehension of the instances of the mind. After extensive analysis, our investigation revealed that, even though revealing parallels with the three instances of the human psyche, dæmons are in fact an extension of the mind of their humans, that differentiates into a half of a dual psyche. This is indicative of a literary element that goes beyond categorization, providing different ways to analyze them within the scope of Psychoanalytic Criticism.
